It symbolizes the "Star of the East" which helped lead the Three Wise Men to Jesus’ manger.

the star that led the 3 wise men to where Jesus was born. it was the brightest one and so its the brightest on ur tree…and at the top.

I heard a story years ago about the first Christmas tree. I’m not sure if it has any basis in fact but here’s how I remember it.
Long ago, somewhere in Germany, a man is going home at the end of his work day and as the sun went down and the stars came out he was traveling along and was suddenly struck by the beauty of a tree standing along at the top of a hill with the stars shining through the branches. He was so struck by the beauty of the sight that he went home and tried to recreate it for his family. He cut down a tree, brought it inside and put candles on each bough.

The star at the top of the tree (some people use an angel) must almost certainly represents the Christmas star from the Nativity.

Don’t believe that crap about the star in the East followed by the wise men ! Hell Jesus was born in March anyway and most likely it was foggy there too!
I Think it is just an asterisk that is to remind you to ask why we cut down so damned many trees this time of year !
Can you prove to me that Jesus was not born around Noon on a bright sunny day ?
